Policy on Practice Group Assignment

When the coaching staff assigns a swimmer to a specified practice group, we consider a number of variables, including but not limited to, age, speed, technical ability, emotional maturity, work ethic, and attitude. However, the primary consideration for practice group assignment is a swimmer's technical correctness in the practice environment.

FAQ's

  • How many practices should my child participate in to be successful?

Practice attendance plays a key role in your swimmer’s development and progress. While the exact number of practices may vary by age group and training level, we encourage swimmers to attend as many scheduled practices as possible to maximize improvement, build confidence and consistency, and strengthen team connections.

    As a general guideline:

Beginning/younger swimmers benefit from attending at least 2–3 practices per week.

Intermediate swimmers should aim for 3–5 practices per week.

Advanced and competitive swimmers are expected to maintain 5 or more practices per week, depending on their training group.

Regular attendance not only accelerates skill development but also helps swimmers gain confidence, improve fitness, and work toward their long-term goals.

  • Should my child participate in swim meet competitions?

Yes! Swim meets are an important part of the swimming experience. They give swimmers the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in practice, track their progress, and celebrate their hard work. Meets also build confidence, sportsmanship, and team spirit, while helping swimmers set and achieve personal goals.

For younger or newer swimmers, meets are a fun way to gain experience in a supportive environment. For more advanced swimmers, they are essential for measuring improvement, qualifying for higher-level competitions, and preparing for long-term success in the sport.

While participation is strongly encouraged, the decision ultimately depends on your child’s readiness and comfort level. Our coaches are always available to guide families on when and how to get started with meets.

  • What equipment will my child need to be a member of the Montgomery Aquatics?

All swimmers Bronze level and above will need the following equipment:

Practice Suit, Competition Suit, Goggles, Cap, Kick Board, Training Fins, *Pull Buoy, *Hand Paddles, Mesh Equipment Bag.

*Please speak with your lead coach to assist in getting the "right" hand paddle for your child.

  • Where can we purchase our team equipment?

You can find our equipment list in our registration packet.  Contact our team vendor, D&J Sports, let them know what group your child swims in and they can prepare an equipment package for you.

The Bronze Group is the entry level of our program, designed for novice swimmers who are new to year-round competitive swimming. Athletes are introduced to the fundamental skills of all four competitive strokes and gain their first exposure to USA Swimming meets in a supportive, team-oriented environment. Bronze swimmers are expected to demonstrate water safety, follow group instruction, and swim 25 yards of both freestyle and backstroke.

Swimmers are encouraged to attend
three practices per week to build consistency and reinforce skills. While participation in swim meets is not required at this level, it is strongly encouraged, as meets provide valuable experience and an excellent way to measure progress and development.

Silver Group

The Silver Group introduces swimmers to a structured training environment, focusing on refining stroke technique and building race skills such as starts, flip turns, and basic clock management. This group is designed to develop a stronger working knowledge of the four competitive strokes while fostering responsibility and independence in practice.
